The Art Behind the Bag: Original Coastal Artwork on Every Florida Ecobags Tote

Model carrying a large recycled sailcloth tote with original octopus coastal artwork

Every Florida Ecobags tote carries two stories: the story of the sail it came from, and the story of the art it wears. Here's a closer look at the original coastal artwork that makes each bag more than just a tote.

Why Original Art?

When you're working with a material as unique as recycled sailcloth, a generic print feels like a missed opportunity. Every sail that comes through our Florida studio has its own character — its own texture, its own history, its own subtle variations from years on the water. The artwork we put on each bag is designed to honor that.

We work with original designs inspired by Florida's coastal ecosystem: the creatures, the waterways, the landmarks, and the light. These aren't stock images or licensed prints. They're artwork created specifically for these bags, for this material, for this brand.

Florida's Coast as Inspiration

Florida's Gulf Coast is one of the most biologically rich coastlines in the country. Manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, octopuses, sharks, jellyfish, and hundreds of fish species share these waters with the sailors whose sails we repurpose. It felt natural to celebrate that ecosystem on the bags themselves.

Each design starts with close observation — the way an octopus moves, the geometry of a sea urchin's spines, the silhouette of a hammerhead against open water. The goal is artwork that feels genuinely coastal, not just decorative.

The Designs

Here's a look at some of the original artwork in our current collection:

  • Jellyfish — A flowing, luminous design that captures the otherworldly grace of jellyfish in motion.
  • Octavia Octopus — A bold, detailed portrait of an octopus in full color, celebrating one of the ocean's most intelligent creatures.
  • Diggie Octavius — A more playful take on octopus art, with a personality all its own.
  • Octavius — A close-up study of octopus tentacles, graphic and striking.
  • Hammerhead Blue — A powerful, clean design featuring one of Florida's most iconic predators.
  • Sea Urchin — Geometric and beautiful, inspired by the intricate structure of sea urchin shells.
  • Jen's Fish — A warm, personal design celebrating Florida's colorful reef fish.
  • Don CeSar — A tribute to one of Florida's most beloved landmarks, the iconic pink hotel on St. Pete Beach.
  • St. Pete Chart — A nautical chart of St. Petersburg's waterways, for those who love the geography of the coast as much as the coast itself.

Art on a Material That Earned It

There's something fitting about putting original artwork on sailcloth. Sails are already objects of craft — engineered with precision, built to perform, shaped by the hands of riggers and sailors. Adding original art to that material feels like a continuation of that tradition: taking something made with care and adding another layer of intention to it.

The result is a bag that works hard, looks beautiful, and carries a story worth telling. That's what we're going for with every piece we make.
